Why do we cling to the myth that women don’t understand money as well as men?

If you look at the personal finance books out right now, some of the titles might convince you that women need “special help” when it comes to figuring out saving, investing and budgeting. The current self-help tomes include Prince Charming Isn't Coming … SHOO, Jimmy Choo! The Modern Girl's Guide to Spending Less and Saving More … Does This Make My Assets Look Fat? … Girl, Get Your Money Straight … A Purse of Your Own: An Easy Guide to Financial Security.

Judging by these titles, you would think contemporary American women are naive shopaholics or squanderers. But is that really the case?

Data suggests women and men don’t spend that differently. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks consumer spending patterns per gender, finds that personal spending between the genders evens out. For example, while women have historically spent more on their apparel than men do on theirs, recent findings show that men are spending more on eating out, audio and visual equipment and transportation.

Do women run wild at the mall? Data seems to say otherwise. While the most recent BLS data indicates that 76% of women have at least some credit card debt compared with 67% of men, it also reveals that credit card balances are higher for males. Empathica, a firm providing consumer insights to retailers, polled more than 7,200 U.S. consumers in 2009 and found that 72% of women had reduced their retail spending in the recession compared to only 62% of men.

Two surveys suggest women might be more prudent investors. In 2001, a study conducted by two University of California, Davis professors titled Boys Will Be Boys: Gender, Overconfidence, and Common Stock Investment appeared in MIT’s Quarterly Journal of Economics. Looking at patterns across 35,000 households, Brad Barber and Terrance Odean determined that male investors traded stocks about 50% more often than women investors, with their market timing efforts resulting in poorer returns and more frequent fees and charges.

In March 2009, University of Oregon professor Ellen Peters conducted a nationwide survey which revealed that just one in every 40 women had "made riskier investments looking for long-term growth" in the past week, while one in eight men had taken such a risk.

Other surveys find women prioritizing savings and debt reduction. TD Ameritrade has a new poll out in which 68% of women say they intend to save more of their money in 2011, compared to 62% of men. In a 2010 Citigroup survey, 48% of women aged 18 to 39 said that they were saving more money than they had in the past. Overall, 72% of women in the Citi survey responded that they would use extra cash to pay down debt, compared to 65% of their male counterparts.

The real issue is unequal income. On average, women live longer than men and therefore need more money across a lifetime. Yet on average, they don’t earn as much as men. According to the Labor Department, women working full-time after age 24 still earn just 80% of what men working full-time do.

However, the National Center for Women and Retirement Research estimates that 75% of women will be widowed – at an average age of 56 – and that 90% of women will be solely responsible for their financial situation at some point in their lives.

There is no need for condescension; there is a need for comprehension. Women do need to realize the financial challenges that come with potentially longer life spans and potential absences from the workforce, and plan accordingly. But, it’s time to shed the old stereotypes and myths.

Healthy employees equal savings.

That's the message behind a plan to open an on-site medical center that would treat Delray Beach city employees who pay for health insurance and their families.

At a workshop meeting Tuesday, Human Resources Director Bruce Koeser and consultants from Gallagher Benefit Services gave a presentation that outlined the benefits of a having a on-site clinic that could treat employees for illnesses, minor accidents, perform lab and blood tests and pre-employment exams at no cost to them.

With health care costs running about $7 million a year and increasing exponentially, Koeser said the on-site clinic could bend or end the trend of costlier heath care in the future. The city could save money on co-payments to doctors under its current medical insurance plan.

"The good part is there is a saving for the employees too," Koeser said.

Ocoee, Palm Bay and Port St. Lucie already have on-site clinics. Delray Beach could save up to $1.4 million if every employee were to take advantage of the services, the consultants said.

Koeser said Port St. Lucie has been getting about 70 percent of doctor visits from city employees and they've only been running the clinic for about two years.

"Convenience is very important and it would decrease absenteeism," said Jodie Jupp, the lead consultant. "It's a different approach, an innovative way to deal with the long-term costs" of health care.

City commissioners gave the plan a go. Koeser said the city would prepare a request for proposals from companies that offer medical center services and would only have to set up shop at a city building.

Commissioner Angeleta Gray even suggested using the empty Old School Square parking garage retail space.

The medical center would be staffed with primary care physicians and nurses; and it would treat employees at no cost for visits that would generally take a co-pay by both the city and employees under the current plan. The clinic would also have a dispensary where employees could fill prescriptions for generic drugs for free. Blood test, drug tests and X-rays would all be free.

The city spends about $500,000 a year in physicals for police officers and firefighters. It also spends about $1 million in co-payments for prescription drugs.

Portia Dinkins, the city's compensation and benefits manager, said the idea is also to use the services of a wellness coach -- a professional who would keep employees with predisposition for certain diseases from ever developing them through diet and exercise and a healthy lifestyle regimen.

"We would be producing healthier employees," Dinkins said.

Not all rewards cards are created equal. That is, some have restrictions that might result in you deriving little benefit from the card. Let’s look at some crucial considerations you should make when choosing a rewards card.

First, consider why you want a rewards card. Do you want to earn airline miles? Gift certificates at certain stores? Whatever it is, make sure the card offers the right type of reward for your needs. That is, if you spend $100, you don’t necessarily earn 100 points (or miles, or whatever your card rewards you with). You might earn 500 points for every $1,000 in purchases. If your card rewards you with gift certificates at a favorite store, you might have to spend $1,000 to earn a $10 credit.

The lesson here: This lesson is the same as our last one, which is read the fine print and, in this case, do a little math. With the fine print at your fingertips, do the math to figure out if this is a good deal for you. Will you spend enough money each quarter or year to earn satisfactory rewards?

Third, use the card as often as you can. Of course, you don’t want your balance revolving from one month to the next, but charge everything you would normally use cash for. If you know you’ll pay the balance each month, then it makes sense to pay for everything with your rewards credit card – you’ll be surprised how quickly your rewards will grow when you use the card for everything from gas to groceries to movie tickets. And don’t forget recurring charges – like your satellite or cable television service, your utilities, and the like. If you can use a credit card to pay for these services, do.

The lesson here: If you are careful with credit, you can earn your rewards quickly by remembering to use your card for a multitude of purchases.

Finally, don’t lose your rewards. Pay attention to expiration dates (or blackout dates) or anything else that might affect when and how you can use your rewards. It would be a shame to be diligent in earning the rewards only to lose them because you didn’t pay attention to that bit of fine print.

Why Was A Regular Wireless Operator At British Embassy In Paris Booted From His Post Minutes Before Princess Diana Left The Paris Ritz Hotel?

The weekend of Princess Diana's death a spokesperson at the British embassy in Paris claimed that staff there were unaware that the princess happened to be in Paris. YEAH RIGHT! Why then was a very senior Royal Courtier seen at the embassy half an hour before the crash!

The senior courtier seen at the embassy a bare half hour before the crash (according to what appears to be a very credible witness) was none other than Sir Robert Fellowes (currently Lord Fellowes) private secretary to the Queen and brother-in-law to Princess Diana. Lord Fellowes is married to the late princess' sister, Lady Jane Fellowes.

Lord Fellowes has been described as a man totally devoted to the monarchy and the Queen and in the graphic words of a senior British politician he is a man who well understands that the description of his duties entail him to "throw himself in front of the bullets before they hit the Monarch!"

In the words of constitutional expert Vernon Bogdanor, the position of Private Secretary to the Monarch is `one of the most important posts in the British system of government and a mainstay in the institution of constitutional monarchy' and must `guard the constitutional position of the sovereign.'

Lord Fellowes possessed all the characteristics and qualifications necessary to excel as Private Secretary to the Monarch. As Labor politician Harold Laski put it:

"he must know all that is going on; he must be ready to advise upon all. But he must never so advise that he seems to influence the decision taken by the Queen in terms of the premises of his own thought. He is the confidant of all ministers, but he must never leave the impression that he is anybody's man. He must intrude without ever seeming to intrude.

He must learn how to deflect the lightning from others. He must be able to carry the burden of her mistakes. He must not know the meaning of fatigue. Receiving a thousand secrets, he must discriminate between what may emerge and what shall remain obscure ...It is a life passed amid cir[censored] stances in which the most trifling incident may lead to a major disaster."

Coincidentally, the weekend that Princess Diana died, deputy Private Secretary Sir Robin Janvrin was on duty because his superior Sir Robert Fellowes had taken the weekend off. Subsequently in the investigation covering the death of Princess Diana Lord Fellowes was asked to account for his whereabouts that weekend.

His response was that he was at his Norfolk estate in England with his wife and most certainly not in Paris!

However the wireless operator on duty at the British Embassy that weekend has an entirely different recollection of the matter:
